Re: Is Islam a religion of peace? I think that one huge reason so many Westerners believe this - despite all the evidence to the contrary - is that, any time we suggest anything to the contrary, Muslims insist loudly: Islam is a religion of peace!!! How dare you suggest anything to the contrary!!!
I say this as a college prof who has long taught courses on ethics and valuing diversity. Any time I brought up anything to do with differences among religions - such as the Islamic position on jihad - I was met me: Islam is a religion of peace!!! This came from all the students by the way - it's something they had all learned in Canadian grade schools and high schools.
I took me several years until I did research - for example, into the Qu'ran, where there are lots of very non-peaceful passages. Then it was clear: this is not a religion of peace (if you in any way disagree with it).
A second reason why many accept that Islam is a religion of peace is political correctness. People, instead of being taught to think in the West, are indoctrinated with: all religions are equal - though even a brief look at different religions shows massive differences.
