PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - The Philadelphia Flyers endured a heartbreaking loss to the Buffalo Sabres in Game One. However, that must have felt like a joy ride compared to what the team went through in Game Two.
Coming off one of the most embarrassing playoff losses in franchise history, the Flyers return home Wednesday to try and avoid a 3-0 deficit in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the Sabres.
Fourth-seeded Buffalo edged Philadelphia, 3-2, in double overtime in the series opener Saturday before routing the fifth-seeded Flyers, 8-2, in Monday's Game Two.
J.P. Dumont and Jason Pominville each recorded a hat trick to propel Buffalo to its highest-scoring output in a postseason game since demolishing Philadelphia, 8-0, in Game Six of a quarterfinal series in 2001.
After his dominant 55-save performance went to waste in Game One, Flyers goaltender Robert Esche allowed five goals in the first period before giving way to rookie Antero Niittymaki.
Esche did not play poorly, but rather was the victim of his teammates' lack of speed and tendancy for taking bad penalties. The Flyers committed 17 penalties on Monday, resulting in 11 power plays for the Sabres and prompting Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff to say Philadelphia played like "idiots."
