Reese Witherspoon has been named the No. 1 highest paid actress in Hollywood. The ‘Rendition’ star is said to be earning $15 to $20 million per movie. Angelina Jolie placed second on the list with the same price range.

Pete was the drummer With Freakbeat faves The Flies and Please. He was also in a late line-up of Gun before forming the Proggy T2.
This single came out in the UK on Rockfield and the production by Dave Edmunds is pretty spectacular. Dave was in the middle of his Spector recreations in the Rockfield barn at the time and the Welsh wizard pulls out all the stops on this single. Swamped in flange and chorus, Taking Time literally explodes during the instrumental breaks full of psyched out Banjo and unmistakable Dave Edmunds guitar interjections. The B side Still Confused sounds like Badfinger on mushrooms with a nice understated vocal performance from Pete Dunton.

Tuesday evening J and I trooped to a nighttime preview of the Singapore Design Festival"hub" at the City Hall and former Supreme Court building. I'm really not going to comment on the Festival, except to say that it's worth going to take a look at the exhibitions there because:

(1) they made these -
J and I found installations by...not 1...but (at least) 4 female Singapore designers at a show called "Utterrubbish" (hmm, yes, I'm also not a fan of this title). There's a child's room by maki squarepatch, a living room of recycled fashion by Hansel, a small showcase of poetic works by our favourite argentum in one of the judge's rest chambers, and in Court Room 21 is an installation by a new friend, the inimitable kwodrent. Hey, I know it's not about gender, BUT.

(2) you get to wander around these buildings
Not many folks used to get to wander freely the corridors and court rooms of the City Hall and former Supreme Court building (or maybe not many folks wanted to). If you had missed taking a look at the insides of the buildings during last year's Singapore Biennale, you should do so. The Singapore Institute of Architect's show "ArchiFest" is held in, for instance, the historic chambers where the Japanese signed the surrender papers in 1945.

That evening the President's Design Awards were also given out at the Esplanade.

Among the 7 folks who won prizes this year, these 2 stood out for me. Mr Mok Wei Wei (of W Architects) and Mr Eng Siak Loy (currently a designer with the National Parks Board, but the unsung designer behind many of our stamps and our dollar notes!), not for being trendy or enterprising, but for being committed to good design as a career. They have a lifetime of work to speak silently for their art, intelligence and commitment.

Walking home that night, I was thinking if a stronger case needs to be made for commitment and dedication. Often, the arts and design are marketed as sudden flashes of inspiration. Of course there are these moments, and (ah, as Ms Zhang Ai Ling had once declared) what is fame if it is cannot be enjoyed when you are young. But I wonder if we often forget the sheer hard work, the patience and the stamina a designer and artist need.

So to all those folks who feel a little discouraged and getting tired after a trying sprint, the consistency of vision is not only a matter of space, but also time. And Ms Zhang, though not wrong, may not be the only one right.

This review definitely asks more questions than it answers…These two records seem to feature the same band, but they don’t sound at all alike. Wildcat is firmly in Brother Susan/ Slade Glam mode while Yaketty Yak, Smacketty Smack is a lovely pop tune to suit an afternoon of mild S&M activities. Both singles have Sigmund(s)son and Helgason credited as writers (Wildcat adds Rolfe –Could that be Barry Rolfe who recorded Look The Business?), so I would assume a Scandinavian connection. The EMI single is produced by Emil D. Zoghby and to confuse matters even further, I picked up a single by Chance (although credited to Change on the back cover) called Wash My Mem’ries (Pink Elephant PE 22.736 –H) also produced by Emil. That single is rather ghastly, but again could this be the same band? Hopefully our Nordic friends can perhaps provide some information here?

I drew and painted this today. The last drawing was 3 months ago. This year I made 16 illustrations. Last year, at least 60. This year I wrote 0 stories. Last year, there was, at least, 1. This year, I spent an average of 12 hours at the office, and maybe 1 hour outside the office thinking about work each day. For that, my bank account and paycheck boast of slightly bigger figures. Last year, I spent more time walking and talking with J and our family - and maybe even with friends. I'm not sure if these past 2 years were placed side by side, both sides of the equation would add up just right. But the truth - even if excuses are easy to find - is that whatever the numbers stand for and however they are valued, they reflect our choices.

House Of Lilly – Turn Around/ Situations –Eurodisc 12805 (1973 French Issue)

House of Lilly were apparently a Swiss band, but Turn Around is a cracking Punk-edged performance that rocks hard without ever falling into Hard Rock histrionics or Prog indulgences. The only slight blemish is the weak organ solo, but the lead guitar that follows is positively blistering. Their use of English language was nothing if not creative…Can’t make it all out but there are witches flying about and the singer proclaims at one point: “I am The Devil and my breath will blow you up”. His last line ends with: "My..... WILL FUCK YOU UP", but I'm not too sure as to what he was referring to. The B side is OK, but has a flute –go throw it in the lake boy and let’s have more cheese induced delirium!

Angelina Jolie's adopted baby 'result of rape'

Angelina Jolie's adopted Ethiopian daughter was conceived after her mother was raped as she walked home from work, it has been reported.

wo-year-old Zahara was born after her mother, Mentwabe Dawit, was assaulted in the darkness by a man who trapped her on a path outside the southern Ethiopian town of Awasa in 2004.

“He pulled a dagger, put one hand on my mouth, so that I could not scream. He then raped me and disappeared,” Mentwabe told Reuters in Awasa, 170 miles south of Addis Ababa.

The 24-year-old decided to keep the assault a secret.

Her attacker has not been traced.

“I feared the consequences of being raped in a community where rape is considered a taboo, even if what happened happened forcibly,” she said, tears streaming down her face.

Despite her fears, her own mother was supportive and helped her give birth in the family’s earth-floored house.

She named the child Yemsrach, meaning good news in Ethiopia’s Amharic language, but soon found that she could not care for the baby and fled the family home in shame.

“I was desperate and decided to run away, rather than see my child dying,” she said.

Mentwabe’s distraught mother eventually put Yemsrach up for adoption, in the belief her own daughter had died.

Her adoptive parents, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, changed the baby’s name to Zahara.

Now reunited with her mother, Miss Dawit said that she was very happy that her daughter is now a part of one of Hollywood’s most famous families.

“I think [she] is a very fortunate human being to be adopted by a world famous lady. I wish them both all the success they deserve,” she said.

“Maybe you can make out the name Creation written on floor…We were going to go out as The Creation and adopt their image/music...it all kinda fell apart for Smiley… We signed a 10 year contract with Shel Talmy/ Shelbush organisation, who promised to release two singles per year, but it never happened. While we were playing at Top Ten Club in Hamburg ,a record scout Paul Murphy spotted us and we met with the then music director of BASF in Germany...Ralf Arni (think this right spelling) who wrote the song "Tulips from Amsterdam" (Max Bygraves!!!). They wanted to sign us under a fantastic recording deal (well was then), however The Shel Talmy Organisation wouldn't let us leave, and we were cast into the wilderness...no recording possibilities...the band decided to make money we would have to change and be a cabaret band, (something I personally hated) so I left the band and they carried on for around another year”

Once again, Phew!

The German supermodel is planning to follow in Christina Aguilera's footsteps and spend one day a week as nature intended.

She said: "You know Christina Aguilera has 'Naked Sundays'? I might have to copy her and do that. I'll do 'Seal and Heidi's Naked Sunday'."

Heidi and her Crazy singer husband - who have two sons, Henry, two, and 11-month-old Johan, as well as Heidi's three-year-old daughter Leni from a previous relationship - recently revealed baby Johan is ruining their sex life.

Seal said: "Our youngest is now 11 months old, so I've told Heidi we're booting him out of the bedroom. I'm not having it any more. This is the longest time I've known Heidi without her being pregnant. She's got her body back and it's real good fun!"

'People' Magazine Says Matt Damon is Sexiest Man Alive

Sexiest man alive? That would be Matt Damon. People Magazine bestows the honor upon the 37-year-old actor in its latest issue, on sale November 16.

Damon joins his pals George Clooney and Brad Pitt, each of whom has earned the title twice.

In a letter published in the magazine, Damon said "You gave an aging suburban dad the ego boost of a lifetime. My nine-year-old stepdaughter now thinks I'm cool - well, cooler."

Damon married Luciana Bozan in 2005. They also have a one-year-old daughter, Isabella.

People's "sexiest man alive" list began in 1985 with Mel Gibson. George Clooney made the list in 1997 and 2006; Brad Pitt in 1995 and 2000. Other honorees include Denzel Washington (1996) and Johnny Depp (2003).

Damon shared a screenwriting Oscar with Ben Affleck in 1998 for Good Will Hunting. Both men also starred in the movie. Damon's other screen credits include The Departed, Syriana, the Ocean's franchise with Clooney and Pitt, and The Bourne Identity and its two sequels.

Arnold, Martin & Morrow (Go Go Thunder, Butterscotch etc…) are behind this fine slab of orchestral Glammy Psych/Pop. Rescue Co. No.1 had a plethora of singles on different labels, and this is one of the 3 singles they released on the Jam imprint. It’s probably my favourite Rescue single of the lot, but you can also check out Its Only Words posted May 28th 2007. The lush yet sharp arrangement and production is simply staggering and it all sounds a bit like The Move accompanied by The London Symphony Orchestra playing an unreleased Hello tune…I'm sure you’ll enjoy this!

Jessica Alba revealed on a US TV music show that she has a crush on Johnny Depp.

The Sin City star revealed her admiration of Depp on MTV’s TRL.

She said: “I have a huge crush on him. When I saw him at the Golden Globes I made eye contact with him, and got all flustered.”

She added: “Of all the men in the business, he is my favourite.”

Johnny Deep is rumored to be starring in the sequel to Sin City, but Alba, 26, says she doesn’t know if that’s true.”

Alba said: “I don’t know. I sure hope so!”

During the live broadcast, Alba proved to be a whiz at the board game Operation, successfully completing the task that was set for her.

Alba was appearing on TRL to promote her latest movie Awake, starring opposite Star Wars actor Hayden Christensen and Oscar nominated Terence Howard.

The film tells the gruesome tale of a man who suffers anesthetic awareness and finds himself awake and aware, but paralysed during heart surgery.

In a scene in the movie, Alba can be seen topless with her back to camera.

The star has said in the past she would never do nudity on film, but said of this scene, “Nobody was in front of me, but the wall.”

A poster featuring BEYONCE KNOWLES has been labelled obscene by shocked Las Vegas residents.

The bikini-clad Bootylicious star appears in giant form on a massive advertising hoarding for a local radio station and locals have found the racy pic too much to stomach.

They’re demanding it be torn down before it offends their sensibilities too greatly.

One resident said: “It’s obscene. I have my two little grandkids coming over here, and they don’t need to be seeing that.

“You can change the channel on the TV but you can’t change that.”

Pleasingly, city officials will not be swayed by the more prudish elements of the public and have assured the radio station the offending image can stay.

The station manger said: “The billboards were taken from publicity shots and this is the way those people perform.

“So, to show them in a jogging suit probably wouldn’t be the right thing.

“It complies with all the locational criteria that are set out in our code of conduct.”

Lust, Caution

There are 3 reasons to watch Lust, Caution, and for this I shall quote the folks sitting around, beside and behind J and I in the cinema on Saturday. [warning: spoilers ahead]

(1) "[gasp]...so cute"
Even the dogs, cute white ones or saggy-faced Alsatians, play their role well. Every single member of the cast was superb.

(2)"Wah, Louis Vuitton ah"
This film being set in wartime Shanghai and Hong Kong, the costumes (and yes, the suitcases were beautiful too) and art direction are excellent. But because the film could be seen as a play within a film, starting first with the group of over zealous students taking their anti-Japanese play too seriously beyond the stage to the dangerous real world and eventually going undercover as spies for the resistance, the idea of stage and reality, deception and truth gets, a fabricated reality vs real life drama require elaborately set up apartments, fabricated lives, fancy cheongsums that were part-costumes part-real wardrobe. In order to "act out" her seduction of Mr Yee, "Mdm Mak" aka Wang Jiazhi must first has to lose her virginity to a student/fellow actor.

This materiality of their dramas finds its ultimate symbol in the gigantic diamond ring that Mr Yee (Tony Leung's character) purchases for "Mdm Mak" aka Wang Jiazhi. It is a mark of his love for her (since it is a gem he denies his wife), but perceived at first by Wang as a secret transaction with an imagined enemy. And when she accepts and understands the significance of this token, it becomes ironically the start of his betrayal of her - when confronted by the evidence of his complicity with this "spy" (or an insinuation that the money he used to purchase the rock is ill-gotten), Yee must deny that the ring is his.

(3)"哎，張愛玲的故事都是這樣的啦"
For me, the biggest reason to watch this film (other than Lee Ang's interpretation) is that it is based on Eileen Chang/Zhang Ailing's short story of the same name.

It is not the first movie that has been made from her stories. There had been 紅玫瑰白玫瑰 (Red Rose, White Rose) by Stanley Kwan, 傾城之戀 (Love in a Fallen City) by Ann Hui and 半生緣 (Eighteen Springs). Zhang herself wrote screenplays, including the famous 不了情 (Unending Love).

What makes her stories great material for screen is Zhang's ability to turn the internal drama of her characters' lives (their motivations, thoughts, conflicts and contradictions) into social situations - not sitcoms - rather, micro/social situations born out of the larger political or rather historical forces. There can be cruel caricatures (I'll scann later some illustrations/actual caricatures by Zhang - her satiric eye/hand) but however harsh her portrayal of these characters (even the do-gooders have some suspicion cast upon their naivete), they are ultimately excused because humanity - however strong individuals may be - is weak. It is weak in the face of the historical and societal powers/forces/movements it has created in the first place, victim to this tyranny of our collective stupidity/folly/pride. We fail each other. History fails us. We fail ourselves.

You must admit it's a rather tragic vision! And this bears out in Zhang's own life (or at least, I think, that's what us "Zhang-mi"/fans like to imagine!). It is tempting to see 色、戒 with an eye on Zhang's biography. After all, Zhang's first documented love was a married man and a supposed traitor/collaborator with the Japanese. Her mother, like Wang Jiazhi's father, eventually also left for the UK, leaving Zhang alone to live her aunt in China. Zhang, too, spent her university days in Hong Kong, before returning to Shanghai.

But unlike Wang Jiazhi in 色、戒, Zhang was no hapless student who gets lost in the fictional reality of others or of her own device. Zhang was a writer. So with words, she survived. Words provided income. Words afforded a distance, distance gave her writing its wit and irony. But distance also confirmed the tragic vision in words. And if words were not enough (or too much), she created for herself the physical distance of a life in America at age 35. There she survived another 50 years, writing mostly essays and academic work and translations (inc. translations of Emerson) and died alone in her apartment.

Pussycat Dolls Nicole Scherzinger Wants Chris Martin For Duet

Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger is desperate to record a duet with Coldplay star Chris Martin.

The stunning star - who has already collaborated with Sting, Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody and Keane's Tim Rice-Oxley - is eager to hook up with Chris because she loves working with British men.

Atkinson admits sleepwalking fears for ‘I’m a Celeb’

Top of the bill celebrity on smash reality show ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ Gemma Atkinson has warned viewers and TV critics alike about her sleepwalking habits, and has stressed her fear about her doing it in the jungle, in front of live cameras.

She also talked about her fellow contestants being scared of the model’s sleepwalking, and hopes it won’t put others into dilemmas such as getting a stick and prodding it into her.

“I’m just hoping I don’t do anything or, you know, get in bed with anybody when I’m asleep,” Gemma told the Daily Record.

“I’ll maybe go swimming when I’m asleep ‘cos you can do all sorts can’t you? My mum’s found me in my wardrobe. She’s found me at the top of the stairs. And luckily, I’ve been woken up by my mum saying, ‘Gemma what are you doing?’

The Real McCoy come up trumps with this KILLER cover of The Equals tune. It starts off as a real solid and driving performance and then all hell breaks loose when the track gets engulfed by majestic swirling phasing. Most records sounded this way anyway on Radio Luxemburg anyhow, but they certainly went the whole hog as the phasing is there for most of the track. Real McCoy were Irish and seemed to have specialized in covering key Bubblegum tracks of the time, but always adding an edge –check out the versions of Round The Gum Tree and Quick Joey Small for further examples of this.

Actress Eva Mendes has escaped serious injury after being thrown off a bucking horse during a photoshoot.

Aguilera has no regrets over 'Dirrty' video

Christina Aguilera has no regrets about her raunchy music video for hit single 'Dirrty' - because it made her feel "empowered".

The singer, who stripped down to a pair of leather chaps for the promo, insists she enjoyed expressing her inner self in the controversial video - and reveled in the controversy that accompanied its release.

She tells 'Glamour' magazine: "I definitely stirred the pot a bit but I had fun.

"If it's under the mark of respectability then it's prudish, if it's over the mark, it's slutty. That's really unfair, so I'm happy I've been able to express myself and be on both sides. People have loved it, hated it, been undecided, and been empowered by it."

Now-pregnant Aguilera has not ruled out donning the chaps at a later date.

She adds: "I was 21 and possibly when I'm 60, if I can still fit into them - at the end of the day, I can say I had a frickin' blast."

Boneshaker –Sweetness –The Mike Berry Story Part 3

Boneshaker –Sweetness/ Badman Strikes Again –London HLU 10332 (1971 UK)

Sweetness is another magic Mike Berry production of a great song –it’s real ’67 psych with a pinch of Russell Morris’ The Real Thing and some commercial Steam catchiness (Na Na Na), it should have been a hit.

Sweetness was written by Bill Parkinson, a session man Mike used on many of the cover versions he did for Reditunes. At the end of a session at Radio Luxemburg, Mike recorded Sweetness at the 4 track studio there. The band on the track were the same guys who recorded Hey Hey Jump Now/ Goodbye (CBS 7760) as The One Hit Wonders.

The track also has a strange monophonic Phasing/Flanging effect quite unlike the swooshing phasing so prevalent in ’67. MB “The original phasing was great. I first heard it on Timi Yuro’s The Hurt. The second time I heard it was when I was in Regent Sound Studios when The Small Faces recorded Itchycoo Park. The engineer let me have a go at it. I’m not sure if my attempt at manual phasing (releasing one ¼ tape slightly after the other) was used on the record, but I just love phasing”.

Sweetness was the first British record to come out London American … MB: “ Nobody wanted to release it, but a friend of mine went to Geoff Milne at London Records who loved it, but we had to pretend it was an American record!”

The B side is a fun Creedence Clearwater Revival recreation with a C&W bent and masses of gunfire sound effects.
“It had nothing on the B side except a backing track that I had done when in my John Fogerty mood. I loved Bad Mood Rising and we basically just tried to get the sound they got on Cosmo’s Factory. It was a tribute to John Fogerty.”
